The park lakes, ponds, and streams are full of amphibian life, such as bullfrogs and salamanders. It is a great location for bird watching such species as peregrine falcons and eagles. This year’s BioBlitz program will be about Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies).
During the Ice Age glaciers covered the region and left behind interesting geologic formations and also flooded the coastline. The fjord-like Somes Sound is the only feature of its kind on the U.S. Atlantic Coast with its deeply carved head and shallow mouth of glacial deposits.
A wide variety of vegetation has adapted to life in the acidic, low nutrient bogs and rocky, treeless mountain summits. Ferns, freshwater plants, grasses, marine plants and algae, wildflowers, and mosses and liverworts are all found in the park.
